SNPs have emerged as the marker of choice for many genetic studies; however, the
issue of ascertainment bias can be a potential concern. Ascertainment bias arises
because most SNP discovery methods involve blindly sequencing only a few individuals. Consequently, one may identify SNPs that do not provide adequate discrimination either because they are very rare or because they are too common. Furthermore, one may completely miss useful SNPs because they were not included in the ascertainment panel.
The Stellar™ SNP Discovery Kit minimizes this problem by increasing the ascertainment panel to as many as 480 samples. Based on a technique called Eco-TILLING (Gilchrist et al. 2006; Till et al. 2006; Till et al. 2004a; Till et al. 2004b) the technique has been optimized by Frontier Genomics to decrease costs and increase efficiency. The Stellar™ SNP Discovery Kit enables the user to screen up to 480 individuals per 96 well plate by pooling DNA from up to 5 individuals into each reaction. This can be carried out to efficiently identify useful SNP variants from PCR products over 2kb in length.
